From Geneva, Verbier can be reached in 2 hours and 22 minutes by direct Verbier Express train, in 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours by train with changes in Martigny and Le Châble, or in 2 hours by road, i.e. 161 km of motorway. In any case, the last ascent is by the Châble gondola, which has been a public transport since 2021.
This is the question that all those who arrive at Geneva airport with skis or suitcases ask themselves: should you rent a car, take the train, book a transfer? Here are the three options, with their actual durations, prices and details of the last mile — the one that no brochure really explains.
What is the easiest way to get from Geneva to Verbier?
The train, as long as you understand one point: no train goes up to Verbier. The village is perched at 1,500 m, the nearest station is that of Le Châble, 820 m in the valley. The gondola takes over from the quay, in eight minutes.
This load break is surprising, but it is simpler than it seems: the gondola leaves next to the station, runs from 5:10 a.m. to 11:55 p.m. every day, and the train ticket can include the ascent.
How long does the journey from Geneva to Verbier take?
- Direct train (Verbier Express): 2 hours 22 minutes from Geneva-Airport to Le Châble, plus 8 minutes by gondola.
- Train with changes : 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours — about 1 hour 45 minutes to Martigny, then 25 minutes to Le Châble.
- Car : about 2 hours for 161 km, via the A9 motorway.
- Private transfer : 2 hours also, door to door.
The actual gap between the car and the train is therefore small — on the order of 30 minutes. When people return from the weekend or at the end of the school holidays, the Valais motorway becomes congested and the gap is reversed.
How to get to Verbier by train?
The classic journey, every day of the year
Geneva or Geneva-Airport to Martigny via the InterRegio (about 1 hour 45 minutes), then the Saint-Bernard Express to Le Châble (about 25 minutes), and finally the gondola. These connections are regular and operate all year round, without reservation.
The direct train, without changes
The Verbier Express connects Geneva-Airport to Le Châble without change in 2 hours and 22 minutes, with two trains per day and per direction. It runs on Saturdays and Sundays in summer and throughout the winter season, and will increase to one train every two hours on weekends from December 2026. With the RailAway combined offer, the ticket is reduced by up to 70%.
How to go up from Le Châble to Verbier?
Three solutions at the foot of the station:
- The gondola : 8 minutes. CHF 6.40 one-way, CHF 12.80 return; CHF 3.20 and CHF 6.40 in Half-Fare travel. Open from 5:10 a.m. to 11:55 p.m., summer and winter.
- Bus : 15 to 25 minutes depending on the route, approx. CHF 6.
- Taxi : around CHF 60.
The point that few visitors know: since December 12, 2021, the Le Châble – Verbier gondola has been officially recognized as public transport. Half-Fare and GA travelcards are accepted here, just like on a train. For a Swiss traveller with a Half-Fare traveller, the ascent costs CHF 3.20.
In summer, this climb is even free for guests staying in the region: it is included in the VIP Pass, given by your host from the first night.
Do I have to come by car?
The road is simple: the A9 motorway to Martigny, then the Bagnes valley to Le Châble and the mountain road to Verbier. It is 161 km and about 2 hours from the airport.
Two reservations, however. The Swiss motorway vignette costs CHF 40 and is still mandatory, even for a single trip. And in Verbier, parking is paid and limited: a vehicle immobilized for a week becomes an unrequited cost, as soon as the village buses are free for guests.
The car is still interesting if you arrive loaded, if you are staying away from the centre, or if you plan to explore the Valais during your stay.
How much does a private airport transfer cost?
The prices are between CHF 694 for a sedan for 1 to 3 people and CHF 1,237 for a minibus with up to 14 seats, price per vehicle and not per person.
The calculation is quickly made : with four people, a transfer by van costs around CHF 194 per head, compared to about thirty francs by train from Geneva, including the gondola. The transfer is justified from six passengers, with a lot of luggage, or for a late arrival outside the train hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a train station in Verbier?
No. Verbier station does not exist: the train station serving the resort is called Le Châble, in the valley. Some search engines show "Verbier (Téléverbier)" as the destination — this is Le Châble plus the gondola.
Can I come to Verbier without a car?
Yes, without difficulty. Train to Le Châble, gondola to the village, then free buses inside the resort for guests. Many owners and seasonal tenants do not have a vehicle on site.
Is the route passable with skis?
Yes. The Valais regional trains and the gondola are equipped for sports equipment, and the Quai du Châble is a few dozen metres from the departure of the gondola. This is the central argument of the combined train plus ski pass offer.
What is the last train to Verbier in the evening?
The gondola runs until 11:55 p.m., which leaves a comfortable margin after the last evening train to Le Châble. This is what makes it possible to dine in the city and return home without a car.
