With its mountain pastures hanging above the Val de Bagnes, its high-altitude lakes and its guarded huts facing the glaciers of the Grand Combin, Verbier is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in French-speaking Switzerland. Hundreds of kilometres of marked trails start directly from the resort or the ski lifts. Here is our selection, from family trails to alpine routes, with the start, duration and elevation gain for each hike.
Easy walks – to do with the family
The Sculpture Trail
Departure: Les Ruinettes (gondola from Médran) | 3.5 km | approx. 1h30 | +150 m
A fun trail between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux, punctuated by wooden sculptures made by artists from the region. Picnic areas along the way and a bird's-eye view of the Combins massif: the ultimate family walk, accessible as soon as the gondola turns.
The Bisse du Levron
Start: Les Ruinettes | approx. 2h | almost flat
We follow the route of the old bisse on a balcony above the resort, almost without any difference in altitude: ideal with children or at the beginning of the stay to acclimatise to the altitude, before descending on foot to Verbier.
The Lac des Vaux
Start: Les Ruinettes | 4.5 km round trip | approx. 2h | +250 m
A steady climb to a string of high-altitude lakes with clear waters. Swimming for the brave, marmots for the patients, and a memorable sunset for those who come down by the last skip.
Intermediate hikes – to push yourself a little
The Mont-Fort Hut
Start: Les Ruinettes | 4.2 km | approx. 1h30 | +300 m
The great classic of Verbier: a marked route that leads to the guarded hut and its terrace facing the Combins, with two mountain restaurants along the way. Return by the same path or in a loop via La Chaux. Tip: go up for breakfast, the morning light on the glaciers is worth waking up.
The Avoi Stone
Departure: La Croix-de-Cœur (access via Savoleyres) | 6.4 km round trip | approx. 3h | +390 m
The emblematic summit that watches over the Rhône Valley. The finale is won by metal ladders — impressive but well equipped; Avoid with young children or in wet weather. Up there, a 360° panorama from the Matterhorn to Mont-Blanc.
Lake Louvie from Fionnay
Departure: Fionnay (accessible by bus from Le Châble) | 7.7 km round trip | approx. 3h40 | +714 m
A steady climb from the bottom of the Val de Bagnes to one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Valais, dominated by its hut. Allow an additional 35 minutes to go around the lake. High mountain atmosphere guaranteed, without the crowds.
The Corbassière footbridge
Departure: Cabane Brunet (route from Lourtier) | 7 km | approx. 3h | +608 m
From the Brunet hut to the FXB Panossière hut by one of the longest suspended footbridges in the Alps: 190 metres long, 70 metres above the torrent, facing the Corbassière glacier and the Grand Combin. A spectacular route, with a variant at the bottom of the valley for those who fear the void.
For seasoned walkers
The Chamois Trail and Lake Louvie
Departure: Les Ruinettes / La Chaux | approx. 14 km | 5 to 6 hours | Alpine route
The most beautiful race in the area: from the Mont-Fort hut, the path runs on a balcony above the Val de Bagnes to the Col Termin, before plunging onto the lake of Louvie and then Fionnay. Here you will come across one of the largest colonies of ibex in the Alps. Exposed passages: reserved for experienced hikers, well shod and who left early — the return bus from Fionnay is part of the plan.
And in winter?
Verbier is not only walkable in summer: the resort maintains groomed winter trails and marked snowshoe routes — including the ascent to the Mont-Fort hut from Les Ruinettes, magical at the end of the day. - Weather: start early, the weather changes quickly at 2,400 m. Frequent thunderstorms on summer afternoons.
- Equipment: high boots, plenty of water, warm layers and sun protection – even for easy walks.
